Music Education, Instrumental Track, B.A.

A typical student will need over 120 total credit hours to complete this degree. Music Education is the largest music degree program at North Central College, with approximately 60 majors. Students in Music Education complete core music requirements in theory/musicianship, music literature/history, conducting, methods/pedagogy and private study/ensembles, along with a comprehensive set of courses and clinical experiences in education. Music Education majors also have numerous opportunities for leadership through the student chapter of NAfME (the field’s leading professional organization) and in ensembles, productions and special programs.

Instrumental Techniques


Instrumental (band) majors are required to take MUS 322, MUS 323, MUS 326 and one of their choosing; Instrumental (string) majors are required to take MUS 324 and three others of their choosing.

Each student is expected to take primary ensemble and private lessons on the student’s primary instrument for credit. Only when the student would exceed the amount of credits applicable to the degree, or in unavoidable circumstances where the student will exceed 12 credit hours in a term, may the student register for “no credit.” Under no circumstances may the student participate in an ensemble or take private lessons without registering.

Additional Requirement


The Supplemental Secondary Education  major is required.
