Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering is to help students become driven, principled, engineers with an understanding of the potential of technology to address many societal issues. As part of the College of Arts and Sciences, our focus is on developing cutting-edge technical competence in the context of a traditional educational experience that values critical thinking and problem solving, cultural competence and ethics while honing communication skills.

The Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering offers undergraduate programs that follow recommendations from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Our courses and programs are developed and continuously reviewed according to ABET guidelines with input from various constituents including industry advisors as well as alumni.

All our programs share the following characteristics:

  • Focus on building strong foundational concepts with emphasis on hands-on learning and applications.
  • Develop strong problem-solving skills leading to the construction of effective solutions.
  • Develop effective communication and group work skills.
  • Experience on industry-relevant projects through both traditional coursework as well as co-curricular activities.
