Chicago Area Studies Faculty

Mission Statement

Chicago Area Studies offers an interdisciplinary minor introducing students to the cultural, historical, aesthetic and sociological dimensions of Chicago and its suburban and rural communities. Courses explore the variety of communities, people and places that make urban and suburban life a fascinating collection of places and experiences. North Central’s location in the Chicago metropolitan area provides an ideal setting for this exploration. Historically significant suburbs, classic urban neighborhoods, new urbanist communities and the world class city of Chicago provide endless opportunities to learn about the dynamics of urban and suburban development as people pursue careers in urban planning, museum studies, social service, community and public relations, criminal justice, social entrepreneurship and environmental studies. Additionally, students are also presented with the unique opportunity to study in Chicago first hand by choosing to apply to the College’s Chicago Term. Students will have the opportunity to take classes from North Central faculty in the city, explore its downtown and neighborhood locales and develop career enhancing skills and contacts with a Chicago based internship site.
