ENGL 228 - On the Power of Stories: Literature and Film in the Health Humanities4.00 credit hours An examination of narratives across genres - short stories, novels, plays, poetry, film - and across the life cycle. Stories of illness, disability, pandemics, and trauma help students gain empathy, understand differing cultural contexts, and address systemic inequities in the healthcare system. Through regular writing and presentation, students practice rigorous humanities methods such as close reading, interpretation, creative storytelling, and rhetorical skills. Emphasis will be placed on the humanities as a values system: students will build competencies in historical viewpoints, individual and structural issues, and ethical listening.
