MPAS 515 - Narrative Medicine and Patient-Centered Communication 2.00 credit hours This course will utilize the basic tools of language and story to develop narrative craft skills and how to encourage and interpret, synthesize and critically think about their patient’s history. Sessions will include reflections and artwork that highlights humanism in medicine. The reawakening of humanistic values will segue into the communication unit where students will be taught the basics of the patient-centered interview both in person and via the evolving practice of tele-medicine. Medical communication cases will allow application of advanced communication skills which highlights tone, context and conflict concerning death, dying and loss, relaying bad news and medical errors. Specialized communication regarding preventative, rehabilitative, acute and chronic using the teach back method will be highlighted.
