SGBS 343 - What is Scientific Objectivity?4.00 credit hours (Same as: SGBN 343 .) Our current notion of objectivity emerged in the mid-nineteenth century sciences. This course charts the emergence of this notion and the vision of the world it makes possible. At stake in discussions of objectivity are the questions “what is reality composed of?” and “what is its relation to us?” Is it lying there waiting to be known, is it constructed, is it made up of things-in-themselves or things behind the phenomena? Can being and knowledge be separated? These are some of the questions that are entertained in this course.
Cardinal Directions Designation(s): Humanities, Ethical Dimensions. iCon(s): Innovating the World.
