MLD 638 - The Social Significance of Sport 3.00 credit hours This course considers topics of historic and current cultural interest, such as the role of sport in the construction of race, gender, social class or ethnicity; the use of sport to achieve political ends; the socio-political purposes of urban and suburban sport spaces; the religious nature of sport; the globalization of sport as an economic and cultural function; and the role of sport in socialization processes. The seminars are intended to provide students with a greater understanding of the theoretical and practical roles of sport in society.
